Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
